A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on France: that counter-attacks by the 271st Division and the 1st SS Corps on Grimbosq failed; the 86th Corps reports that 200 Allied tanks were turned back by mortar and artillery fire south of Frenouville; the 1st SS Panzer Corps report Allied aircraft are attacking Allied territory, with disorganised Allied anti-aircraft guns firing at Allied aircraft; battle reports from the 2nd SS Corps; the 21st SS Panzer Division; and the 277th Division; on the boundaries and front line of the 2nd Panzer Division; that the 2nd SS Panzer Division is pinned down by Allied fighter-bomber activity; the 84th Army Corps reports all road movements are impossible because of Allied fighter-bomber activity; that the 2nd Parachute Corps is to make a slight withdrawal to a new line; that a Battle Group formed from elements of the Lehr Division and still fit for fighting in the Alencon-Le Mans area under Oberst Gerhard is to protect the withdrawal of non-mobile elements of the Division; that U.S. troops stopped 8 km west of Le Mans and are apparently attempting to by-pass it; that 100 Allied tanks with lorries and infantry are 2 km north of Guipavas, with German Air Force (GAF) support requested but it is out of range; the 7th Army quote detailed orders from Hitler for the defence of fortresses, harbours and defence zones; a 25th Army Corps situation report for August 7, covering that Battle Group Koenig made contact with the 265th Division, tanks and infantry fighting in St Nazaire, the Brest and Lorient battle areas, and that terrorist participation is in the proportions of a general up-rising; of orders from Hauser, Ground Officer Commanding in Chief (GOCinC) for the 7th Army, for an attack of the 47th Panzer Corps to be continued with all forces and to achieve a break-through to Avranches; and that the 10th Air Corps is to transfer immediately to Reims from the south of France, including its tasks and subordinations.
