Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on West Europe: that the 84th Corps requires German Air Force (GAF) air support to maintain its main defence line, on July 4; the 84th Corps claims defensive successes in the Carentan area with the use of all its reserves and with heavy casualties, on July 4; the 84th Corps' situation report, for the morning of July 4; of enemy penetrations in the 17th Division's area, on July 4; a 1st Panzer SS Corps return of serviceable tanks and assault guns, for July 1; of the GAF at Orleans' restriction on the use of vehicle fuel, on July 3, in favour of producer gas or horses; that the 2nd Air Fleet's operations against shipping are endangered by a shortage of bombs, on July 2; and that the Ground Officer Commanding (GOC) the 2nd Parachute Corps complains of difficulties in bringing up supplies, on July 2; on Germany: that a GAF training unit is to deliver 25 crews, but cannot foresee others because of the fuel situation; on South Europe: that the 76th Corps is to withdraw to a specified line during the night, on July 4; and that the 76th Corps is to hold its main defence line for about 8 days, from July 4.
