Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on North Africa: that Rommel requests the despatch of Italian flak forces because of the success of British air attacks on supply convoys, on May 22; from the Bulgarian minister in Vichy on U.S. demands concerning Martinique, on May 19; from the Japanese ambassador in Vichy, that Laval seeks Japanese assistance to defend Madagascar against Allied invasion, on May 3 (the Prime Minister (PM) orders this to be shown to Roosevelt); from the Turkish ambassador in Vichy, that Italian threats to French territory have receded, on May 21; and from the Italian ambassador in Santiago, that Chile is upset at U.S. restrictions on the supply of petroleum, on May 18.
