War: Arrest of The Times Correspondent Dudley Clarke in Madrid

14 Aug 1941

A file of correspondence and directives produced after the arrest in Madrid of British intelligence agent Dudley Clarke, who at the time of his arrest was dressed as a woman. The documents include a report of his initial arrest and interrogation by the Spanish police, including photographs taken by them of Clarke in women's and men's clothing. The file also includes an exchange of British government telegrams providing instructions on the need to conceal Clarke's identity as a British officer (Clarke was travelling undercover as a newspaper correspondent), discussions of efforts to minimise embarrassment for the British government, and instructions to have Clarke sent home at once if on release he showed any signs of "mental derangement".
