Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) Weekly Situation Reports SWR 1 - SWR 16

A file of weekly situation reports from the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC), produced just before the outbreak of the Second World War. The reports were distributed under strict conditions of secrecy to a limited number of people including Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, Lord Halifax and Winston Churchill. Among the topics discussed in the reports were the political situation in Europe, including German-Polish relations and the prospects for American, Spanish, and Turkish neutrality; Anglo-Soviet negotiations; German military activity, including the build-up of troops along the Polish border; Italian troop movements in the Mediterranean; German economic readiness for war, including raw material stocks; the threat posed by German warships to British trade; and the early stages of the German invasion of Poland.
