ANNEX. 1. On 5th April, 1941,* it was stated that Germany must be expected to seek control in or attack the Iberian Peninsula as soon as the situation in the Balkans was clarified. If she succeeded in eliminating British forces from Greece, no resistance to German wishes could be expected from the Government or any other elements in Spain. If, on the other hand, her forces in the Balkans were defeated or held in check for any considerable time, then she would still feel obliged to gain control of Spain, if necessary by force, in order to strengthen the attempt to blockade the British Isles and for reasons of prestige.
