Japanese Reaction to an Assault on Nagoya Area Note by the Secretary (U.S., J.I.C.285)

1 Jul 1945

5. Air (See Appendix "B"). We believe the Japanese air forces, by 1 February 1946, will have suffered such great losses in aircraft, trained pilots and new production, and such extensive damage to repair and maintenance facilities that their capabilities will be largely restricted to guerilla and suicide tactics. However, by making a maximum effort to disperse production and conserve strength, it is possible that they may have in tactical units a total of some 1500 to 2000 aircraft. Of this number, the greater part would be based within easy operational range of the Nagoya area.
