between their forces and those of the Navy, Army and Air Force lie only in the methods they use which in most cases cannot be acknowledged. Their forces undertake work which, though exceptionally dangerous has no different object from that sought by the regular forces. S.O.E. operations, if they are to fulfil their purpose must play their part within the framework of agreed Imperial and Allied strategy. The means by which this integration of S.O.E. operations with general strategy is sought to be achieved, is by the issue of periodical directives by the Chiefs of Staff Committee, and by certain liaison arrangements between S.O.E., the Service Departments and the Secretariat of the Office of the Minister of Defence.
