Destruction by the Enemy on Withdrawal from Occupied Territory. Report by J.I.C.

1 May 1943

(iv) Italy The Germans might make a strategic withdrawal from Italy either in anticipation, or as a result of an Italian collapse. In either case, opposition by the Italians, both Military and Civil, and the relatively small size of the German forces which are likely to be there, would probably preclude any large scale demolitions either "military" or "economic". Some demolition of military equipment and perhaps of key transport points might be carried out. So long as the Italians continue to fight, demolitions on the scale of a tactical withdrawal must be expected.
