Report No. 6. The Control of the Straits of Gibraltar - July to October, 1936

1 Jun 1937

(d) The most vital problem during the initial days of the revolt was the transportation of troops both Moorish and Legionary from Morocco to Southern Spain. Not only was the fate of South-west Spain dependent upon speedy action by Franco's troops, but the success or failure of the whole revolt might be decided by the results it achieved at the outset. 5. Situation 18th to 20th July, 1936. On 18th July, about 2,400 Nationalist troops were transported from Ceuta to Algeciras in Spanish Mail packets; they landed without opposition and were sufficient with sea co-operation to secure both Algeciras and La Linea for the Nationalists.
