Security Matters relating to Abdication of King Edward VIII

27 Nov 1936

A file of correspondence concerning the abdication of Edward VIII in December 1936. The file consists of a number of telegraphs intercepted by British police which prematurely announced the royal abdication, proclaiming the Duke of York as King George VI and Princess Elizabeth the heir apparent, before any official announcement had been made. The file also includes correspondence concerning the possible effects of this announcement in the British Empire, and police reports and press clippings relating to a false report that Wallis Simpson was the subject of a bomb threat.
