Beach Reconnaissance - Middle East

15 Mar 1949

TOP SECRET COPY FOREIGN OFFICE, S.W.1. 10th June, 1949. TOP SECRET A/C/67 Before trying to arrange diplomatic clearance for the beach reconnaissance on the Libyan coast, in accordance with the recommendation at J.I.C. (49) 55th Meeting, item 2(i), the Foreign Office have decided that it will be necessary to know exactly the scale of the reconnaissance operation proposed, viz., the size of shore parties, what craft, if any, will participate and whether air reconnaissance is also involved. As to the Gulf of Aqaba, there is no objection to reconnaissance of the Transjordanian part of the coast (which is all that is intended, I understand) and operations may now proceed.
