Communist Activities in Uganda

15 Mar 1949

COPY. UGANDA DISTURBANCES For some years a political faction in Uganda, the Bataka Party, has been attacking the authority of the Native Government of Buganda, a state within the Uganda Protectorate. The ruler of Buganda, the Kabaka, is in treaty relations with H.M.G. by virtue of the Uganda Agreement 1900 which secured his right to rule Buganda under the protection of Britain. The Bataka Party, which consists of a number of political adventurers seeking personal power and relying on the credulity of the African population for support, claims that the Kabaka's Chief Ministers and County and District Chiefs are inefficient and corrupt and ought to be replaced by elected authorities.
