A volume of meeting minutes of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. The JIC members discussed a vast range of international and domestic issues in their meetings. In this file, subjects documented include indications of Soviet preparedness for war; peace negotiations in the Korean War; the exchange of prisoners of war with the communist forces in Korea; operations in the First Indochina War; the future of British intelligence in Germany and Austria; arrangements for information sharing between NATO and Commonwealth members; leakages of information to the press; political movements in the colonies; the lifting of travel restrictions on Western diplomatic officials in the USSR; and the diplomatic dispute with Egypt over the Suez Canal.
