Minutes of the Fifty Fourth Meeting of the Committee, Held in Conference Room "G", at the Ministry of Defence, S.W.1. on Wednesday, 24th May. 1950 at 11.00a.m.

2. INTELLIGENCE ORGANISATION UNCLASSIFIED THE COMMITTEE had a discussion on the organisation of intelligence, a record of which has been circulated separately to those concerned. 3. SUPPLY OF AIRCRAFT TO ISRAEL SECRET REAR-ADMIRAL LONGLEY-COOK referred to a recent telegram+ from Middle East Land Forces reporting, inter alia, that ten jet aircraft were believed to have reached Israel on the 2nd May from Czechoslovakia or Holland. In view of the significance of that report, he suggested that the Air Ministry and Joint Intelligence Bureau should investigate the matter further. THE COMMITTEE:- Invited the Air Ministry and Joint Intelligence Bureau to investigate the report of the arrival of jet aircraft in Israel, and to report. + 62442/GI, MELF ISUM 11. 4. MILITARY AND AIR ATTACHE IN CHINA. CONFIDENTIAL AIR VICE MARSHAL OGILVIE-FORBES referred to the present position regarding the establishment of a joint Military and Air Attache in China. The present holder of the appointment, Air Vice Marshal Warburton, was at present in Hong Kong pending resolution of the difficulties attending His Majesty's representation in China. He suggested, however, that in view of Air Vice Marshal Warburton's previous association with the Chinese Nationalists, there was little chance of him personally being acceptable to the Chinese Communist Government. It was therefore for consideration whether Air Vice Marshal Warburton should be withdrawn from his appointment. BRIGADIER BOUCHER said that it would probably be desirable for a senior Service Attache to be appointed to China as soon as the way was clear for Service representation there. Pending the resolution of the present difficulties, however, the War Office would not oppose the withdrawal of Air Vice Marshal Warburton. THE COMMITTEE:- Invited Mr. Reilly to take up the question of the withdrawal of Air Vice Marshal Warburton, in the Foreign Office, and to inform the War Office and Air Ministry of the Foreign Office's views accordingly. -2-
