A volume of meeting minutes of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. The JIC members discussed a vast range of international and domestic issues in their meetings. In this file, subjects documented include assessments of the military strength and future policy of the Soviet Union; the sharing of intelligence with the United States of America, India, Pakistan, and Burma; control of important natural resources such as oil and uranium; arrangements for the reception and interrogation of Eastern Bloc defectors; the organisation of a Western European defensive union; security, censorship, and the release of classified information to the public; weapons testing and development; and intelligence organisation and gathering in Europe and the Middle East.
