Basic Intelligence Brief for U.K. Delegations to the Brussels Treaty Military Committee & the Northern European and Southern European Regional Planning Groups

A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC's reports. Subjects covered in this file include information sharing between members of NATO; inadequate security arrangements in France; security classifications of secret documents; the loss of classified documents in the colonies; the threat of war between Pakistan and India; the possible effects of a Soviet occupation of Western Europe in the event of a major war; the defence of Hong Kong and Australasia in the event of war; Soviet intentions in Germany and Austria; Soviet development of chemical weapons; and the invasion of South Korea by North Korea in June 1950.
