Reduction in Turkish Forces - Assessment of Forces in Adjacent Countries

1 Jan 1947

Bulgarian Land Forces. 6. The Bulgarian Army had a strength of about 70,000 six months ago but is now reduced to 55,000. Although the Bulgarian Army is limited to this figure by the terms of the Peace Treaty, it is probable that further attempts will be made, with Russian connivance, to evade the terms of the Treaty. The frontier guards have already been transferred from the Ministry of War to the Ministry of the Interior and are not included in the present estimated strength of the Army. The Peace Treaty lays down that the frontier guards should be included within the Army ceiling.
