Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Western Europe: of Himmler's approval being given to the V1 programme of a new formation AKZV operating under SS Lieutenant General Kammler; on the possibility of setting up an observation post in Dunkirk to provide fast information about the air situation between the Hague and the English coast, with the plotting of flying bombs transferred to the North Sea area with a range of 370 km envisaged; and of fuel restrictions being imposed on jet aircraft taxiing to conserve the small stocks of aviation fuel; on South-east Europe: that the German withdrawal in Yugoslavia is under threat from a group of Tito's forces from the area of Tuzla, hence the Commander in Chief (CinC) for the South-East's request for at least two of the formations intended for the operation SOUTH HUNGARY to thrust from the north towards Sarajevo or to smash the forces near Tuzla; and on the failure of the 369th Croat Division for a second time despite its tough commander Major General Reinecke, saying that Croatian Legionary formations are not suitable for a main-line confrontation with Soviet divisions that are fresh from successes in Herzegovina, and warning of internal political and economic complications if substantial portions of Croatia are given up.
