Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following message: that the Prime Minister (PM) is back in his London office after his overseas trip; and the following reports on Western Europe: that the 5th Panzer Army is to withdraw overnight on August 25/26 and to cross the Seine overnight on August 26/27, with its Army Battle HQ to be set up in the Poix area; that the 7th Army is to pull back 11 divisions to behind the Somme line for a rest and refit and to construct defensive positions, on August 25; the Commander in Chief (C-in-C) West's assessment of dangers for the 19th Army, as at August 25; of German withdrawals north from the Lyons area; that the 11th Panzer Division is to be pushed forward from the Lyons area to Jura to block an outflanking movement from the direction of the Swiss frontier; that Hitlers orders that no more divisions are to be disbanded and that those divisions no longer fit to fight are to be withdrawn and placed at the disposal of the C-in-C West for rest and refit by German High Command, on August 24; that Hitler orders the disbanding of staffs and units released by the course of fighting in the west, with the personnel released to be at the disposal of the C-in-C West for employment on the battle front, from August 25; on a German covering line along the Marne, on August 27; of the assembly areas for 3 divisions moving into France from Germany, on August 26; and the 65th Army Corps reports 38 V-1's were launched overnight on August 22/23, totalling 7981 launches since the launch programme started in mid-June; on Southern Europe: that the 5th SS Mountain Corps is possibly to move at short notice from southern Dalmatia, on August 28; of the Germans evacuating a battle group from Crete to Greece, with some troops to be disguised as the sick and wounded and to travel on board a hospital ship, on August 27; that naval war staff in Berlin object to the Admiral for the Aegean's proposal to use a hospital ship to evacuate operational troops, saying such ships are to be used only for genuine sick and wounded personnel, on August 28; and that the Germans are preparing to give up the southern Peloponnese to concentrate on the defence of Attica, on August 27; on Eastern Europe: of a German force south of Bucharest being surrounded by Romanian forces, on August 26; of the Russians advancing along the Danube to Galatz and Constanta, and a Russian spearhead advancing to the Bulgarian border, on August 26; that Hitler orders the Germans to remain in Bulgaria; that heavy Romanian air defence prevents planned German paratroop operations in the Ploesti oilfields' area, on August 26; and that German High Command is expecting an anti-German uprising in Hungary, and makes contingency plans to counter any such event, on August 25; Naval Headlines reports for August 26, 27 and 28; from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, noting instructions from Tokyo on August 24 ordering the ambassador to put pressure on Germany to conclude a peace agreement with the Soviet Union so she could devote all her resources to fighting the Western Allies, because the situation had become critical; a request from the ambassador to Tokyo listing a series of likely questions from the Germans before they would even consider the Japanese request and requesting Japanese government answers, on August 25; a lengthy 2-part message of August 21 after talks with the German Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, giving an assessment of the current war situation, stating that the Germans are to mobilise an additional 100-125 divisions, and describing future German strategy and the move of the Laval government to Belfort; and a two-part message of August 19 listing information from a Japanese agent in contact with German military HQ, giving details of German relations with Turkey, Bulgaria and Finland, German mobilisation and the continuing trials of those implicated in the abortive assassination attempt against Hitler on July 20; from the Japanese minister in Berne, a very gloomy assessment on August 21 of the German war situation following a visit to Berlin from August 13-17; from the Portuguese minister in Berlin, that the Laval pro-Nazi French government is to move to Baden Baden in Germany, on August 21; and from the Spanish minister in Tokyo, detailing plans to replace the Japanese ambassador in Madrid, possibly in an attempt to work for a peace agreement, on August 24.
