Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on France: of the 66th Corps transferring to Besancon, with its commitments at Clermont-Ferrand being taken over by General Ottenbacher; the 47th Panzer Corps report the ammunition depots MUENSTER/FERGUSON and MANDEL/EDGAR have been blown up, causing an increased strain on the ammunition situation; of the 2nd and 116th Panzer Divisions arriving at an assembly area without fuel, with fuel urgently needed to ensure their limited mobility; of the 54th Panzer Corps seeking fuel; that Panzer Division Lehr has been without fuel for two days, with 30 of its tanks immobilised; a German Air Force (GAF) situation report for August 13, stating that withdrawals in the Caen area as far as the Mayenne area have gone according to plan, and an additional covering line has been constructed between Domfront and Alencon; that an Allied thrust in the direction of Rouen is expected; that the 10th SS Panzer Division is to withdraw further to the east during the night of August 13-14; battle reports from the 74th Corps; the 10th SS Panzer Division; the 9th SS Panzer Division; the 1st SS Corps; and the 276th Division; of the 1st Army being subordinated under Army Group B with the 48th and 338th Infantry Divisions; that the Military Commander for France is anticipating an operation by the Allied 8th Airborne Division, and has ordered increased alertness in north west France; that the Nordfels, carrying coal, was unable to leave Lorient for Brest because of a lack of fuel; that Gironde is reported to have been heavily mined, so the Captain of U-boats in the West needed Bordeaux for berths; and that objections were raised to the concentration of about 20,000 vehicles in Nancy, on August 11; Naval Headlines, covering U-boats U-445 and U-650 having left La Pallice for Lorient laden with ammunition, on August 12; that movements of Allied forces have been interpreted by the Japanese Commander in Chief (CinC) for the South West Area Fleet as confirmation of an imminent attack on the Philippines; proposals for the use of limpet mines by swimmers against Allied shipping in coral atolls; and a Japanese estimate of the air strength at the U.S. naval and military bases in East Asia.
