Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on France: of orders for an attack on the southern flank of the 7th Army, to be commanded by Panzer Group General Eberbach - and that the fate of the Battle of France depends on its success; that the 9th SS Panzer Division interpret renewed Allied tank and transport concentrations as indicating an intention to force a break through at Estry; that the 1st SS Panzer Corps' front line indicates the elimination of a German salient separating the Allied forces, on August 9; of a large Allied penetration in the sector of the 363rd Infantry Division; of a readjustment of the line of the 86th Army Corps; that strong Allied tank and transport traffic in the bridgehead is moving south; that the main defence line of the Panzer Lehr Division is south of Alencon, running from north west-south east with their left neighbour being the Battle group Oberst Reich; that Evron has been occupied by the Allies; and the 84th Army Corps report a catastrophic fuel situation, on August 9; of street fighting in St Malo, the 8th U.S. Infantry Division being identified there, with high German losses from Allied bombing, and the intentions being to hold the town at all costs; the 7th Army report the Allies are attacking north west of Mortain; that the 331st Infantry Division, without Battle Group Debeneck, is to assemble in an area about 25 miles north east of Alencon, on August 9; and that Major Berger of the 11th Panzer Division was ordered to advance at once with tanks by road from Blois-Chartres; on Southern Europe: of the 76th Panzer Corps withdrawing to a general line and leaving strong rearguards in contact with the Allies; and that the 75th Corps is to hand over to the 14th Corps, its left neighbour, and to transfer to an area north of Genoa, on August 11; and on East Europe: of comprehensive preparations for the defence of East Prussia with the cooperation of the population, and that rumours of its collapse are totally unfounded, on August 9.
