Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on France: a German Air Force (GAF) report of armoured spearheads breaking through via Le Mans, Blois and Orleans; and that transport columns are to go via Paris-Troyes-Dijon and at fighting strength because of the danger from guerrillas, on August 9; Naval Headlines, covering one-man submarines being involved in an operation against Allied shipping in Seine Bay, on August 3; that comprehensive preparations for the defence of East Prussia have been made; that harbour installations at St Malo have been blown up; instructions on convoy policy in the Biscay area; and that U198 is operating successfully in the Mozambique Channel; from the Japanese naval attaché in Berlin, giving further details of the Hitler assassination plot, and of the demoralisation of the German troops on the Eastern Front, on August 3; and General Jodl's briefing to Japanese service attachés on Germany's military position, from early July.
