15 Jul 1944

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Western Europe: of the 10th SS Panzer Division expecting a British attack on the Normandy front, on July 15; of the Panzer Lehr Division withdrawing in the face of Allied attacks in the Carentan area, on July 14; of the 84th Army Corps suffering heavy casualties as the Allies thrust forward in the Carentan area, on July 14; of the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division being pushed back and losing Tribehou and Gournay, on July 13; on the front line of the 84th Corps as at July 14; that the Germans ban probably all rail traffic in France except for military and food trains in view of the coal shortage and sabotage, on July 13; that the Germans are to stop mass arrests and deportation of non-terrorists in France as there were no facilities to transport them away and there was a danger of inflaming the rest of the French population to join the terrorist forces, on July 12; and on the results of an Allied massed air raid on Munich, on July 12; on Southern Europe: a German Air Force (GAF) in Italy summary for July 13, noting the Germans were expecting Allied landings at a number of locations in the Mediterranean area but as yet had no idea of the precise Allied intentions; that all 3 German Corps west of the Apennines withdrew according to plan overnight on July 13/14; of the 5th Mountain Division expecting an Allied attack east of the Apennines, on July 14; that men from anti-aircraft artillery units of the 2nd Air Fleet are to transfer to Germany, probably to join the German Army or the Waffen SS, on July 12, indicating that the order for the transfer of GAF personnel to the army was not just limited to the GAF in Germany; and that a GAF airfield in the Budapest area requests the transfer of GAF fuel reserves from Romania due to large numbers of aircraft passing through in transit, on July 11.
