Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Western Europe: that the 84th Corps is to withdraw on its northern sector overnight on July 13/14; that the fighting power of the 84th Corps in the St Lo - Carentan area is so reduced that units would be unable to hold out against future Allied pressure, on July 14; that elements of all 3 regiments of the 5th Parachute Division are operating on the western sector of the Normandy Front as at July 14 - the unit was previously in eastern Brittany; and that German Air Force (GAF) units in Germany are to transfer some 25,000 men to the German Army, from July 13; on Southern Europe: of a withdrawal by the 16th SS Panzer Grenadier Division in Italy; of the Front line now running from Poggibonsi to the Leghorn area, on July 13; of further withdrawals on the main Italian Front by the 26th Panzer Division and the 14th Panzer Corps, on July 13; and a GAF summary for July 13 including the results of Allied air raids against Venice and Verona.
