14 Jul 1944

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Western Europe: that the 3rd Parachute Division in the central sector of the Normandy Front loses large quantities of weapons as a result of Allied attacks, on July 11; from the Portuguese minister in Pretoria: a report of July 10 following a meeting with General Smuts, describing a discussion of the war in Europe, and South African pressure for Portugal to join the war on the Allied side, to stand up and declare war on Japan for seizing its colony of Timor; and the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) Central Department's report of July 14, GUNPOWDER 42, on the question of Portuguese Timor, passing on information from a source which SIS believed provided authentic summaries of German cipher telegrams relating to various countries, and a message of July 1 from the German Legation in Lisbon to Berlin on talks between Salazar and the Japanese minister in Lisbon, detailing Portuguese pressure for the Japanese to leave Timor and return it to Portugal.
