Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on West Europe: a situation report of July 8, covering the attack on Caen continuing with undiminished violence; that the 9th SS Panzer Division is unable to shift its defence line because the enemy artillery fire is too heavy; on the 10th SS Panzer Division's front line, as at July 8; that the 1st SS Corps urgently requests German Air Force (GAF) fighter protection southwest of Caen, on July 8; the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division's day report for July 7, stating it was unable to seal off an enemy penetration, and suffered high casualties; of Allied penetrations in the Carentan sector, on July 8; of the 3rd Parachute Division, southeast of St Lo, taking heavy daily casualties from artillery and aircraft, on July 5; that General Fieldmarshal Sperrle, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) the 3rd Air Fleet, prohibits all non-essential journeys because of the fuel shortage caused by Allied air attacks, on July 7; on the cancellation of the 10th Air Corps' plans for a flare-dropping squadron, on July 7; on indications of the disbandment of the 10th Air Corps, with bomber units being transferred away, on July 7; that the GAF are to cease ferrying to Merignac, on July 7; and that Hitler orders GAF photo-reconnaissance of Cherbourg, on July 8; on South Europe: that the 14th Panzer Corps makes a slight withdrawal, giving the main defence line in the area of penetration, on July 8; a 2nd Air Fleet situation report, for the night of July 7-8; and that the GAF require reinforcements in the Airasca area, in north Italy, to deal with guerilla activity, on July 7.
