23 Jun 1944

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Western Europe: a report from von Schlieben's battle group at Cherbourg for the night of June 22/23, that the Allied forces had broken through just outside Cherbourg, and that the German forces were insufficient to oppose them, the Allied forces being much stronger than originally estimated; that von Schlieben calls for anti-tank ammunition to be brought by sea to Cherbourg as all the stores there were exhausted; and that the 1st SS Panzer Corps in the Caen area is expecting an Allied attack on the right flank, on June 22; Naval Headlines, covering German attempts to get military supplies into Cherbourg by U and E-boats, most of which were aborted because the garrison was about to capitulate; from the Saudi minister in London, a report of June 20 on the past 6 days of V-1 attacks on London - the ambassador considers that they will have no influence on the future course of the war; and from the Portuguese minister in Ankara, a report of June 21 on the resignation of the Turkish Foreign Minister, which signified a more pro-British stance by Turkey in future.
