Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Western Europe: of a morale-boosting signal from Hitler to von Schlieben at Cherbourg, on June 21, ordering that the battle group must defend to the last pillbox and leave the enemy not a harbour but a field of devastation; a battle report from the 1st SS Panzer Corps for June 21, noting the Allies are re-grouping after heavy losses; and that Maquis forces surround Limoges as of June 19, with the Germans there asking for reinforcements; from the German secret service in Lisbon, an order of June 19 from Berlin asking for any information on the effects of the secret retaliatory weapon, i.e. the V-1; on Southern Europe/the Mediterranean: that the German Air Force (GAF) plans on June 22 for an attack on June 23 against an Allied troop convoy which headed north from Gibraltar on June 21 (this item is not on the coversheet); on Western Europe: the Germans report Allied air landings in the Granville area, on June 22, and seaborne landings possibly in the same area; that a regiment of the 326th Division, last known to be in the Pas de Calais, is located near Granville, as of June 22; that the German Navy considers that the building up of stocks in the Channel Islands is more important than supplying Cherbourg, on June 22, so landing craft are to be moved from Cherbourg to the Channel Islands under cover of darkness; that 4,100 naval personnel are within the Cherbourg fortress, on June 21; and a battle report from the Cherbourg fortress for June 22, recording that the Allies are closing in and the last fortress reserves had been committed (this item is not on the coversheet); on Southern Europe: that the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division is to withdraw to the area south of Siena, on June 22; that the Germans claim to have left Elba without losing a man or boat in the face of Allied air and sea attacks, overnight on June 19/20 (this item is not on the coversheet); and on Western Europe: battle reports from the Cherbourg, Caen and Tilly areas, including corps and divisional boundaries, for June 22 (this item is not on the coversheet).
