22 Jun 1944

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Western Europe: that Allied tanks penetrate the German Cherbourg main defence line on June 21; that von Schlieben informs Rommel that his battle group at Cherbourg is in a state of disarray, that the troops of the 709th Division were exhausted and unfit for further combat, that with heavy officer casualties leaderless groups of the 77th and 243rd Divisions were more a handicap than a support, that the Russians were of dubious value when fighting in France for Germany against the U.S., and that immediate reinforcement is necessary, on June 21; and a battle report from the Cherbourg Peninsula for June 21; on Southern Europe: 6 battle reports from the main Italian Front for June 21, noting the Germans were suffering heavy losses while retreating in the face of heavy Allied attacks; Naval Headlines, which includes an item on U-boat operations in the Channel, required to support the Cherbourg fortress; and from the German secret service in Lisbon, regarding recent instructions from Berlin to report any information received on the effects of the V-1 attacks on London, forwarding information subsequently obtained from a contact in the Brazilian Embassy in Lisbon who had been given a comprehensive report on effects of the bombing by British diplomats who had arrived in Portugal on June 18.
