This file includes the following reports on Western Europe: that a German battle group receives its orders to defend the Cherbourg Peninsula, on June 19; situation reports from the battle group, for June 19; and that the 7th Army orders the 1st SS Panzer Division Adolf Hitler, last located in May in the Dunkirk/Ostende area, to be subordinated to the 1st SS Panzer Corps, opposing the 2nd British Army; on Southern Europe: of the withdrawal of the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division south of Siena being impeded by heavy Allied artillery fire and guerilla ambushes, on June 19; and a German Air Force (GAF) summary for June 18, noting the arrival of 2 Allied aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean suggests preparation for landing operations, and also noting the Allied transfer of some 800 close support aircraft to the Rome, Tarquinia and Terni areas; Naval Headlines, which includes 2 interesting U-boat items; that St Peter Port on Guernsey was only to be visited in emergency situations as it had become too dangerous; and that U-boats in the Channel were ordered to take any necessary risks to reach their operational area north of Seine Bay; Naval Headlines for June 18; the Prime Minister (PM) asks the First Sea Lord (ISL) to comment on an item from the German Navy Office in Bordeaux proposing the transfer of some 30,000 tons of shipping for raw materials to provision of supplies for the 7th Army; the ISL replies to the PM with a minute of June 20 stating that appropriate U.K. military commanders had been informed of the plan but as yet there were no signs of it being implemented, and if it were, appropriate counter-measures would be put into force; and a Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) Southern Department report number 199 of June 15 based on information from a neutral source in Turkey on the current Turkish attitude, and that Turkey is now expected to adopt a more pro-Allied attitude.
