A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Western Europe: that Hitler and Rommel order the fortress at Cherbourg to be defended to the last; that the 84th Corps gives the 709th Infantry Division sole responsibility for the Cherbourg area, on June 17; battle reports for the Cherbourg area, for June 18, covering that the Germans are starting to demolish roads in the western part of the peninsula; reports from the 243rd Division; that German naval personnel at Cherbourg are required to defend the weakly garrisoned fortress to release army personnel for the land front, on June 18; that another week is required if the Cherbourg quay installations were to be thoroughly demolished before the German withdrawal; that the 77th Infantry Division suffers heavy losses as it withdraws south through the Cherbourg peninsula, on June 18; and that the 352nd Division in the Saint Lo area is expected to run out of ammunition after June 19; on Southern Europe: that the Commander in Chief (C-in-C) for the South-west considers the defence of Elba to be of decisive importance for the conduct of the war on the Southern Front, on June 18; and that the 14th Corps has been opposed to date by 3 divisions of the American 6th Corps and the 3rd Algerian Division, while the Moroccan Corps with its high fighting qualities had still to be committed to battle, on June 18.
