Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on France: of the 17th SS Panzer Division's plans for retaking Carentan, and request for air support, on June 12; of the front line given by the 81st Corps; that Chateau St Come was retaken from the Allies; of lively fighting near Sannerville; and of the intention to attack Sallenelles, on June 12; that the German Air Force (GAF) are unable to provide ground-attack support for an attack on Carentan for lack of aircraft, on June 12; that the 2nd SS Panzer Division is on the march in the direction of Tours, on June 12; that the GAF's orders for June 13 include supplying Douvres; the 13th Flak Division reports an extremely strained fuel situation, as of June 12; the 3rd Flak Corps reports the Allies are reinforcing north west of Caen, and increasing pressure south west of Tilly, on June 12; that a GAF Ground Attack Unit ordered to move to Chartres from Laval is short of transport, on June 12; that the Torpedo Command at Bordeaux is to send torpedoes by road to Le Havre via Paris, on June 11-12; the 84th Army Corps reports its Ground Officer Commanding (GOC), General Marcks, was killed, and an Allied penetration south east of Carentan, on June 12; that a surgical unit is urgently requested by the Sea Defence Command in Normandy to cope with extremely heavy casualties, on June 11; of Allied air raids on Alencon and Laval, so it is no longer possible to supply Douvres, on June 12; of a complaint from the Commander in Chief (CinC) in Holland that the 19th Panzer Division is inadequately armed, and that an application for weapons was arranged by the 47th Panzer Corps, on June 6; of a shortage of aviation fuel, with none at the GAF Field Fuel Depot at Montbartier, on June 11; and that trained bomber crews from Hungary are to be sent by the quickest route, via Paris without leave, with heavy casualties and delays expected because of the transport situation, on June 8.
