Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: of elements of the 44th Division, north of Cassino, withdrawing overnight on May 24/25; of the 26th Panzer Division withdrawing, on May 24; that the main defence line in the sectors of the 26th Panzer Division and the 305th Division are to be withdrawn overnight on May 24/25; that elements of the 334th Division were withdrawn from the front line overnight on May 23/24; and a German Air Force (GAF) in Italy situation report for May 24, covering that the Allies take Terracina, Sonnino and Ponte Corvo, that there is fierce fighting in other areas, and noting over 2,000 Allied air sorties over Italy but only 230 GAF sorties; on Western Europe: a detailed report of May 15 from the Commander in Chief (C-in-C) West on moves and locations of German units in France, the results of an Allied air raid against Bergerac in south-west France and the results of German operations against partisans in central France; Naval Headlines; and from the Japanese ambassador in Venice, a report of April 30 giving a 7-page summary of a conversation with Mussolini who in turn related talks he had had with Hitler when on a recent visit to Germany, stating that Mussolini was dedicated to the German cause and would commit more Italian divisions to the Axis war effort, that Hitler was determined to fight to the last as, if the Allies won, both he and Mussolini would be dragged around the world as showpieces, and that German casualties on the home front were enormous but morale remained good.
