This file contains a message from C to the Prime Minister (PM); and the following reports on Italy: the 2nd Air Fleet's situation report on May 21, including that the Allies were thrown back from Piedimonte but have penetrated the main defence line south-west of Pico; the 15th Panzer Grenadier Division reports an Allied attack on the main defence line on a wide front over Campodimele; and a critical lack of ammunition caused by difficult tracks and congested roads, on May 21; that the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division is unable to hold the main defence line because of the Allied artillery bombardment, with some units exhausted; and that Allied infantry with tank support forced crossings of the Liri northwest of Ponte Cupo and near San Giovanni, on May 21; the 26th Panzer Division reports Allied penetrations into Pico; a German counter-attack from the west and north; a request for a ground-attack operation against an Allied concentration preparing to cross the Liri; and a German tank attack supported by infantry against the Allied crossing of the Liri at Cubo; that the 26th Panzer Division was ordered to thrust with Panthers on the road to Pico in the direction of Pontecorvo against the Allied flank but this was not carried out, on May 21; the Ground Officer Commanding (GOC) the Venetian coast reports an Allied air raid on Faenza, with rail installations being destroyed, and traffic disrupted, on May 20; that the 1st Parachute Division, noting large-scale Allied preparations, anticipates attacks on Aquino and Piedimonte on May 21; that the 51st Mountain Corps, noting an assembly of Allied forces in the area in front of the 1st Parachute Division south of Cassino, expects a large-scale attack on May 22 against the whole right corps sector; of a request from the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division for early reconnaissance on the coastal sector from the Fondi area to Terracina, on May 21; of the 334th Division being withdrawn from the Orsogna area for the Southern Front, on May 21; and battle reports from the 94th Infantry Division; 15th Panzer Grenadier Division; 1st Parachute Division; 5th Mountain Division; 334th Infantry Division; and 715th Division, for May 21; and on South-eastern Europe: of the consumption of mineral oil being ordered to be substantially reduced to take account of a considerable reduction in the June allocations of fuel oils resulting from the effects of Allied action in Romania and on German hydrogenation plants and extensive failures of mineral oil production, on May 19.
