Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file contains a message from C to the Prime Minister (PM); and the following reports on Italy: reports of fighting on the main Italian Front, including the Allies suffering heavy losses in attacks on Piedimonte, with one battalion claimed to have been wiped out by the 5th Mountain Division, on May 20; on the divisional boundaries of the 26th Panzer Division and 94th Division, on May 21; a 3rd Panzer Grenadier Division report on May 20 describing heavy artillery and mortar fire and bitter hand to hand fighting; the 715th Division reports an Allied attack on the 1028th Grenadier Regiment following a smoke, phosphorus and incendiary bombardment; and that Allied landing boats have been sighted assembling 30 km west of Cape Circeo; on South-eastern Europe: of the whole of the Peloponnese being declared a battle zone, with strict instructions for curfew, etc. to be observed including the taking of hostages, and the shooting of Communists and violators of curfew or movement restrictions, on May 19; that the naval fuelling sub-depots at Corfu, Kalamata, Navarino, Preveza and Argostoli were informed of a 20% reduction in fuel supplies to their shore stations compared with April, as at May 19-20; on Eastern Europe: the 3rd Romanian Army reported a concentration of Soviet ships at Odessa preparatory to a landing on the Romanian coast, on May 18; on Western Europe: the 3rd Air Fleet's appreciation of the air situation as of May 20, noting systematic Allied air attacks on German Air Force (GAF) and German Naval Radar installations in the coastal area, and attacks on airfields in Belgium as of special interest, which taken with heavy attacks on rail installations in north and west France have been assessed as the start of a second series of operations against supply traffic and GAF ground installations; in general: of objections by the 4th Air Fleet to the withdrawal of eight aircraft being over-ruled by GAF High Command; and that Allied action has resulted in a deficiency in training aircraft, on May 20; and the Japanese naval attaché in Berlin assesses the implications in changes in the pattern of Allied air raids on Germany and German-occupied territory in Europe, on May 11.
