Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Italy: a German Air Force (GAF) general in central Italy reports that no ground-attack operations are possible because all ground-attack aircraft are being used as fighters, on May 17; of a complaint from Kesselring to Berlin on the lavishness of the provision of transport to the Supreme SS and Police Commander at the expense of fighting troops, on May 16; of the Naval Commandant on Elba's orders for the removal of the inhabitants of Elba to Piombino in the course of daily shuttle traffic, on May 19; of Signal Security Officers being informed that the Polish flag had been flying over Cassino Monastery since 09:00 hours, on May 18; of the 94th Infantry Division's front line, showing the Allied advance, on May 18; of shipping and small craft being destroyed or damaged in Allied air raids on Piombino, on May 17; that an Allied air raid on Elba caused great devastation, on May 17; of severe damage caused in air raids on railways in the Perugia and Ancona areas, on May 18; on the 10th Army's supply problems, with an estimate of its daily consumption of fuel and ammunition, and noting special requirements for ammunition, on May 15; of a request for clarification of the course of the CIRCEO switch line, on May 18; the 51st Mountain Corps reports strong Allied artillery fire is hindering the occupation of the SENGER switch position, an expectation of Allied attacks on the wings of the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division and the 14th Panzer Corps, and the current position of the front line, as at May 18; the 76th Panzer Corps reported a move of the 26th Panzer Division, on May 18; of the 188th Reserve Mountain Division taking over the Coastal Sector of Istria, on May 18; on movements of the 305th Infantry Division, 334th Infantry Division and 71st Infantry Division, on May 18; that the 15th Panzer Grenadier Division is to take over the Sector of the 71st Division, from May 18, with the divisional boundaries being given; a report from the Commander in Chief (CinC) for the South West on nausea and vomiting being experienced from Allied smoke shells, with troops being ordered to collect shell cases for analysis, on May 17; the 15th Panzer Grenadier Division reported sending a further battalion to the 94th Infantry Division, on May 18; of orders from the CinC for the South West (Army Group C) regarding subordination of the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division and the 525th Anti-tank Unit to the 10th Army, on May 13; and a report from the CinC for the South West (Army Group C)'s General of Engineers on the state of fortifications, the supply situation and listing requirements and proposals, on May 15.
