Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file contains a message from C to the Prime Minister (PM); and the following reports on Italy: the 94th Division report positions to be under attack by massed infantry supported by a heavy artillery barrage, that its right wing has disengaged and is ready for defence on the CIRCEO switch line; the 1st Parachute Division report the town and Monte Cassino have been evacuated according to orders and that the SENGER switch position has been occupied by Battle group Schulz; of the Staff of the 44th Division taking over command of a reinforced battalion in an area about 7 miles north west of Esperia, on May 18; that the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division is to withdraw its front to a line east of Pontecorvo - Aquino, on May 19; a day report from the Commander in Chief (CinC) South West (Army Group C) for May 17, describing a large-scale Allied attack on the 10th Army; the 14th Panzer Corps reported the 15th Panzer Grenadier Division in Gaeta was under a heavy-calibre naval bombardment; of the 94th Infantry Division's withdrawal going according to plan despite strong Allied attacks; of the 51st Mountain Corps holding out against heavy tank attacks supported by artillery and ground-attack aircraft; that the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division was unable to hold up the Allied tank thrust; and that Allied shipping in the Mediterranean includes a convoy from the U.S. possibly en route to Malta; Naval Headlines, covering a destroyer flotilla carrying out exercises out of Gironde; that three U-boats named the Dragoner Group are sailing out of Brest; that severe damage was caused in air raids on Porto Ferraio, Piombino, Stefano and Orbetello, with the inhabitants of Elba to be moved in daily shuttle traffic to Piombino; that a large amount of shipping in Bari harbour causes the Germans to expect landings on the east coast of Italy; that an English commando raid led by bandits was carried out against Paros, with the bandit leader being captured, and believed to be in the British wireless station on Paros; that a Japanese Naval force was sighted at anchor in Tawitawi, and is believed to be the 5th Squadron; a preliminary report of an Allied air attack on Surabaya on May 17; that seven Japanese submarines are on the patrol line between the Carolines and New Ireland; and Japanese rocket bombs for use against battleships and carriers; from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, on the Allied offensive in Italy, the prospects for an Allied invasion of Europe, relations between the U.K.-U.S. and the French, and the move of Pétain to Paris, on May 16; and from the Japanese ambassador in Moscow, passing on information from a Russian source on conditions in the liberated area of Kharkov, Kiev and Zhitomir, on May 1.
