Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on South Europe: that the need for anti-aircraft artillery was shown by an Allied raid on Monfalcone, on April 14; that the Commander in Chief (C-in-C) for the Southwest forms reserves to counter possible further Allied landings in Italy, on March 14; and the German Air Force (GAF) at Lucca report an attack on Sarzana, on April 14; on South and South-east Europe: of damage caused by Allied air raids on central Italy and Dalmatia, on April 12 and 14; on South-east Europe: a German appreciation that the Allies intend to tie down German forces in the Balkans rather than launch a major undertaking, on April 14 - the Prime Minister (PM) orders that General Wilson is to see a copy; on Germany: a GAF appreciation of the overall air situation, as of March 24; and a report to Goebbels that 250,000 people have to be fed in Frankfurt-Main and Offenbach after Allied raids, on March 23; Naval Headlines, covering supply arrangements for U-boats; from the Japanese minister in Madrid, relating a discussion of Germany's improved war situation with the Spanish Foreign Minister, on April 10; and from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs to all stations, concerning British political unrest and the precarious position of Eden, on April 8 - the PM says Eden is to see it.
