Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file contains a message from C to the Prime Minister (PM); and the following reports on Italy: battle reports for March 27 from the 334th Infantry Division and the 1st Parachute Division, at Cassino, noting attacks and counter-attacks with heavy losses on both sides; of a request from the Commander in Chief (CinC) for the South West, Army Group C, for the rapid bringing up of an engineer bridging battalion with full equipment to act as cadre personnel for Italian labour battalions for road repair work, on March 25; and the CinC South West Chief Quartermaster's return for March 24, stating the main supply lines are near Padua and Rimini as a result of heavy Allied air raids; on South and South-east Europe: a German Air Force (GAF) situation report for March 26; on South-east Europe: that Russian officers are to be used to ferry German aircraft, on March 27; on Eastern Europe: a situation report from the German Naval Liaison Officer with Army Group A for March 23, including that the 17th Army was attacked on two fronts with Soviet local penetration north of Bulganak, that the 6th Army was withdrawn from the Nikolaev bridgehead, that the Konstantinovka and Pervomaisk bridgehead was evacuated according to plan, and that the Voznesensk bridgehead was evacuated; 4th Air Fleet reconnaissance reports for March 26; of a Romanian order for the use of Romanian lighters for purposes of Romanian mobilisation only, jeopardising the Germans' seaborne supply, on March 26; and of GAF orders for the speedy salvage and repair of all fighter and heavy fighter aircraft in Albania, on March 26; on Germany: of GAF orders for the encouragement of volunteers for the fighter arm for the defence of Germany, on March 19; Naval Headlines, covering that the destroyer Erich Steinbrinck is to carry out torpedo firing in Oslofjord; that the Japanese aircraft carrier Taiho is to leave Japan via the Bungo Channel on March 28; that the aircraft carrier Zuiho is to leave Yokosuka carrying aircraft to Guam, on March 28; that the aircraft carrier Ryuho is to leave Yokosuka for the Marianas, and probably join the Zuiho near Hachijoshima; that the converted carrier Hitaka with a destroyer escort is to leave an Inland Sea port for either Manila or Palao, then to be used to transport oil; and that the light cruiser Noshiro is to leave for Palao; and a special report on the new Soviet Union - Badoglio relationship, on March 27.
