Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file contains a message from C to the Prime Minister (PM); and the following reports on Italy: a situation report for March 2, stating that bad weather is holding up attacks on Cassino, and that long-range artillery are in continuous engagement with Anzio and Nettuno; of a company of SS Police being attacked in Rome, and that 260 Italians are to be shot in reprisal; an assessment of the Allied shipping in the Mediterranean; and that an Allied commando raid on Pianosa was beaten off; on Hungary: that its occupation by German troops is going according to plan; that the main body of Battle Group Hildebrand has reached Szegedin; that Battle Group Brauner has reached Crbas; and that Streckenbach has reached Batascek-Mohacs; that the locations and strengths of the Hungarian forces are being established; that the attitude of the population is continuing to be from non-committal to friendly; that the attitude of the military is deteriorating in some quarters; and that there is a possibility of the formation of guerrilla bands near Veszprem, on March 25; on the Adriatic: shipping and air raid reports for March 24 and 25; Naval Headlines, covering three northern waters U-boat Groups' redisposed patrol lines; that the German garrison on Hvar suffered heavy losses; that an Allied landing was made on Mljet; that the Japanese aircraft ferry Taiho is bringing more aircraft to Singapore for the 1st Carrier Squadron; that the light cruiser Noshiro is due to leave Japan for Palao following repairs; and that the fleet tankers Takasaki and Tsurumi are due to leave Palao for Saipan; from the Japanese minister in Madrid, describing a discussion with the Spanish Foreign Minister, Jordana, on the progress of the war, on inter-Allies relationships, on the Soviet recognition of Badoglio, and on the likely Spanish reaction in the event of an Allied invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, on March 20; and the French chargé in Bucharest comments on the Soviet advance in Bessarabia, on March 23.
