Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file contains a message from C to the Prime Minister (PM); and the following reports on South-eastern Europe: that the 771st Engineer Landing Battalion is due to arrive in Sumartin, on Brac, on March 27, escorted from Zara by the Colubrina and Insidioso; the German Air Force (GAF) Command for the South East in Vienna reported investigations are being carried out to discover the locations and strengths of the Hungarian armed forces, and that one Hungarian soldier was shot in an affray with German soldiers, on March 23; on Italy: of German aircraft losses over Cassino, on March 22; the Commander in Chief (CinC) for the South West, Army Group C, reports deserters from Italian fascist units reporting to German units especially of the Todt organisation, some being accepted on establishment, and procedures for the enforcement of Il Duce's order of February 18 for the punishment of deserters, on March 24; on Eastern Europe: a summary of goods and men shipped to and from Crimea in February, and that some units were damaged by sea but none by hostile action although convoys were attacked by submarines and aircraft, on March 1; a 4th Air Fleet report for March 23; and that German ground attack aircraft attacked Soviet forces pushing forward north west of Balti and ferrying traffic in the Yampol area; Naval Headlines, covering a U-boat Group being split into two groups and given new operational areas; that Group Nord reported the postponement of the transport of secret weapons to be used against Allied shipping at Nettuno, which is now expected in the week of March 26-April 1; that air reconnaissance was ordered for the area from Bendetto-Ortona to look for possible landing intentions; that Japanese naval transports used in Singapore are to be used as fleet supply vessels carrying heavy oil; that the aircraft carrier Hitaka is to leave Japan for Palao and go thence to Balikpapan; that a large convoy with an escort including the light cruiser Yubari is due in Saipan, on March 30; and that Japanese submarines are on patrol to intercept Allied shipping bound for the Marshalls; from the Irish ministers in Rome and the Vatican, on signs of German preparations to leave Rome; and on rumours of an agreement with the Vatican against further bombing of Rome, on March 23; from the Japanese military attaché in Istanbul, describing the bombing of Sofia on January 25 and its effects on the Bulgarians; and German intelligence musings on Germany's war prospects, as of February 23.
