Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file contains a message from C to the Prime Minister (PM); and the following reports on the Italian Front: the 14th Corps reports the repulse of Allied attacks on Cassino with heavy losses on both sides, on March 21; the 1st Parachute Division reports artillery operations being hampered by lively Allied fighter-bomber activity, on March 20; and the German Naval Harbour master at Stefano reported simultaneous air raids on Ercole and Stefano putting Ercole out of action for six days, on March 20; Naval Headlines, covering mine-laying U-boats being in the Trinidad area; that the Admiral for the Adriatic reported the island of Sulet to have been occupied by the Allies; that a new E-boat flotilla based on Athens is to have special torpedoes; that Japanese troops on Wotje (the Marshalls) are on reduced rations and suffering from malnutrition; and that the Japanese Commanding Officer of the 9th (Sabang) Base Force is to sail in the minesweeper Hatsutaka on a tour of inspection of the west coast of Sumatra; and from Berlin, instructions to all stations to be prepared for propaganda action on Finland, from March 18.
