This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: on the results of Allied air raids in the Spezia area, on March 13, with several railway bridges being destroyed; of a German steamship being sunk in Spanish territorial waters, on March 12; that a German Air Force (GAF) order of March 8 ordering the withdrawal of a fighter group from the Rome area to Bonn was cancelled, and that the unit would deploy instead to Belgrade as of March 9; Naval Headlines; from the Japanese ambassador in Ankara, forwarding a statement by the Turkish Foreign Minister, on British arms and oil supplies to Turkey, on British pressure on Turkey to enter the war, and on Soviet/Turkish relations, on March 8; from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, a very detailed report of March 9 on discussions with the German Vice-Minister Steengracht on the current war situation, and on Allied pressure on Germany's allies and neutral countries in an attempt to isolate Germany; from the German minister in Vichy, a report of March 3, relayed by Berlin on March 7 to Tokyo and other German embassies, on the minister's talks with Marshal Petain and general impressions of Petain; and from the Turkish minister in Stockholm, describing ongoing peace negotiations between Finland and the Soviet Union, on March 11.
