This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: of the results of Allied bombing raids on Rome, covering March 1-3, noting some damage was caused to the Vatican; on the Russian Front: that the 6th Army is soon to be completely encircled, on March 9, describing heavy German losses with some regiments now being down to some 80-100 survivors; Naval Headlines, covering U-boat communications and events in the Far East; from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, a report of March 7 on the results of an Allied daylight raid on Berlin the previous day, the first such raid on this scale; from the Siamese minister in Berlin, a report of March 8 on an Allied daylight raid on Berlin on March 6, there being no German Air Force (GAF) fighter reaction and that the Allied aircraft dropped propaganda leaflets; and also an item on major developments in Finland which were still being withheld from the German public, with Finland possibly being a second Italy in the making; from the Turkish minister in Stockholm, detailing Swedish attempts to broker a peace agreement between Finland and the Soviet Union, on March 9; and from the Turkish Foreign Ministry in Ankara, a message of March 9 to the Turkish ambassadors in London, Moscow and Washington on future Soviet intentions, namely an advance through Europe along the Danube.
