Description

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Southern Europe: three beachhead battle reports, for February 27; that the 715th Infantry Division appreciate a strong Allied defence, on February 27; and that a German Air Force (GAF) fighter squadron based in southern Yugoslavia and Albania is transferring into the air defence of the homeland, and therefore operation PANCREAS will not take place, on February 26; and Naval Headlines, including the Far East. This file also includes the following correspondence: from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, a weekly report, from February 12; from the Turkish minister in Budapest, on Hungary's plight, as of February 23; from the Chilean ambassador in London, detailing air raids in London, on February 25; and from the French Vichy minister in Budapest, on the danger of air raids, on February 25. This file also includes further reports, on the Russian Front: of an air attack on Helsinki and Oulu, on February 26; that preparations for blowing up a 30000-ton dock at Nikolaev were concluded by February 26; and of a reference on February 10 to a most severe bottle-neck in propellers for ME 109 and FW 190 aircraft. This file also includes the following further correspondence: from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, giving information from his usual contact, on February 24; from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin, a conversational directive regarding the escape of forces surrounded at Cherkassy, on February 19; from the Peruvian charg� d'affaires in London, describing air raids on London, on February 25; four agent's reports on activity in Italy, covering February 25 to 27; from the Spanish military attach� in Rome, on the beachhead battle in Italy, on February 24; from the Japanese military attach� in Lisbon, noting the effect of Allied air raids on Germany, on November 15; and that current reports on the concentrations of railway rolling stock in England are required, on February 22.
