Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

21 Jan 1944

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Turkey/the Balkans: a message of January 15 from the German naval attaché in Istanbul, passing on a request from the German ambassador asking what assistance the German Navy could give to Turkey if she were attacked by the Allies; and a signal of 22 January from the Prime Minister (PM) to Roosevelt replying to the President's signal of January 19 (see 5389), in which the PM suggests that the Soviets may now be reading Japanese diplomatic communications, and that if so this could explain the Pravda story.
