A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports: BONIFACE summaries for the Deputy Prime Minister (PM) and Mr Loxley; a SLICK copy sent to the PM who is abroad; on Southern Europe: that the German 44th Division of the 14th Panzer Army is in a new main defence line, and facing increasing pressure from an Allied offensive under cover of dense fog, on January 10; of German plans to land forces on 2 Dalmatian islands during the early hours of January 12 with the support of the German Navy; of the results of an Allied air raid on Piraeus and details of other Allied air operations over the Balkans and the Aegean and Ionian Seas, on January 11; on the Russian Front: of German tank crews being flown to the Russian Front, on January 9; of German Air Force (GAF) reconnaissance results; and a German ground situation report for January 11, both reflecting Russian advances; of a strong Russian landing near Cape Tarchan in Crimea, on January 10; of other Russian advances through Ukraine, on January 10; of the German Army fighting defensive battles in the Kirovograd area with GAF support, on January 10; of GAF plans to support German ground forces on January 11/12, with their bombers not to operate in marginal weather conditions, but only in good conditions when closed formations could be maintained; and that the German naval authorities fear a threat to Odessa by Russian tanks advancing from Vinnitsa, on January 11; and on Southern Europe: the German Foreign Office reports that Turkey is ready to help in supplying the distressed population of the Dodecanese, on January 11. This file also includes an apparent 2nd sigint summary for January 12 but only the 2 copies from C to Bletchley that were annotated SLICK, for probable transmission to an undesignated GCU for the PM, DTG 121520Z; 2 items are annotated as BONIFACE, and the remaining 5 items were taken from the SUNSET report for the day. No supporting reports are contained in this folder, and the items in summary are as follows: BONIFACE, on Southern Europe: that 3 German vessels engaged in supply traffic between Rhodes and Leros were attacked and sunk on January 11 in Livadia Bay, and Piscopi, by Allied motor torpedo boats; on the Russian Front: of a Russian landing on January 10 east of Tarkhan on the Sea of Azov coast of Crimea; SUNSET, on Southern Europe: that 8 trains of the 3rd Panzer Grenadier Division arrived in a detraining area in the 76th Corps' sector by January 9, having taken 3 days to cross the Appennines; a 10th Army situation report for January 10; of the withdrawal of the remaining elements of the 65th Infantry Division being delayed by a lack of locomotives, on January 9; that by January 6 the harbours at Civitavecchia and Nettuno had been so badly damaged by the Allies that further destruction would result in a complete standstill; and on the Russian Front: of Russian advances on January 10.
