This file includes the following reports on Italy: that the 14th Corps is anticipating an Allied attack in the Cassino direction during the last week of December; on the Adriatic: of a landing being effected, of land fighting against increasing partisan resistance, and on the prospects for Operation PENITENT 3; on South-eastern Europe: that a heavy air attack on Piraeus has aggravated the Aegean shipping situation, on December 22; Unit Holler reports the cutting off of Gythion by partisans, with German forces inadequate to cope; that reinforcements are urgently requested together with supplies of ammunition; that the urgent delivery of weapons and ammunition to Greek nationalists has been requested, with suggestions they could be employed on operations; and that food is in short supply; an urgent request from Stoeckle in Monemvasia, for weapons to be sent to Molai for the safety of the nationalist population after the departure of the German troops, on December 23; of the Naval Officer in Command (NOIC) in Gythion calling for the urgent reinforcement of units; that strong partisan groups are trying to encircle Gythion, on December 22; the 15th Mountain Corps in Croatia reports the situation at Velika Gorica becoming more acute, and anticipates a major attack, with extreme danger of losing Velika Gorica, and with Lucko also in danger, and a very tense situation in Agram; the summary of a report of a meeting between the Japanese ambassador in Berlin and Ribbentrop (see also 5213 and 5188); from the Japanese ambassador in Berlin, on the Allied air raid on Berlin, on December 18; on the Russian Front: of Soviet points of penetration in the Nikopol bridgehead being cleared up and that the German Front has improved; and of drift ice endangering vessels withdrawing from Nikolaev, on December 24.
