Government Code and Cypher School: Signals Intelligence Passed to the Prime Minister, Messages and Correspondence

A file of signals intelligence reports, messages, and correspondence issued by the Government Code and Cypher School and sent by the head ('C') of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. This file includes the following reports on Italy: of the steamship La Foce being torpedoed off Sestri Levante, on December 18; of the Ministry of Railways in Berlin being informed of the state of Italian railways, with transport difficult because of interruptions from air attacks, and serious congestion in the direction of Germany, on December 15; a report from the 2nd Air Fleet for December 17, with the 29th and 44th Panzer Grenadier Divisions having been withdrawn according to plan to the 14th Panzer Corps' front line, an Allied push with tanks into Orsogna having been cleared up, and air attacks on gun positions and supply traffic in the 14th Panzer Corps' area; of the front lines of the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division, the 44th Division, Reichsgrenadier Division Hoch and Deutschmeister, the 305th Division, the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division, and the 65th Division, on December 17; of Allied forces penetrating the line of the 26th Panzer Division, on December 17; a 2nd Air Fleet assessment of air raids by United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers on Trento, Bolzano, Innsbruck and the railway from Bolzano-Brenner-Innsbruck; battle reports from the 14th Panzer Corps, the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division, the 305th Infantry Division and the 26th Panzer Division, for December 18, stating that the Allies are pressing against the rearguard troops of the 29th Panzer Grenadier Division, the inner wings of the 44th Infantry Division and 305th Infantry Division, and that the rearguards of the 14th Panzer Corps are engaged in heavy fighting; on the Balkans: that the 5th SS Mountain Corps are anticipating the transfer of fairly strong partisan forces from the Hvar/Brac area to the mainland, possibly between Split and Omis, on December 19; that the waters off Pasman are guarded by the cruiser the Niobe and units of the 11th R Flotilla; a situation report from the Admiral for the Adriatic for December 18, with the German Air Force (GAF) repeatedly requested to destroy artillery and searchlights at the eastern tip of Brac and Hvar, an urgent request that the Allied air supremacy be remedied, stating the need for adequate flak positions, and noting the early arrival of Siebel ferries and landing craft essential for future operations; and from GAF Command for the South East reporting the Bulgarian refusal to hand over U.S. prisoners, on December 18; and on France: of Allied air raids on Southern France, with the rail bridge between Ventimiglia and Marseilles damaged, and the Var road bridge severed, on December 18.
